The Scribe: If you had the chance, is there anything you would like to change or do differently since coming to Yonsei University?
Michaels: I have significant concerns about the STEM department at UIC, as well as the assessment system employed. The department’s performance has been disappointing as it lacks the necessary quality and support to adequately prepare students for their future careers. Moreover, I find the assessment system to be inadequate as it usually solely relies on midterms and finals, disregarding the importance of continuous evaluations and a more comprehensive approach to learning. I strongly believe that a reform is necessary to implement a more effective and balanced assessment system that promotes student engagement, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of the subjects.Â
In addition, as an international student, I deeply value the multicultural environment that our university promises to provide. However, I have noticed a significant imbalance in the representation within the various student activities offered, like the student council; in the student councils for various majors, the majority of members seem to be native students. This lack of diversity and inclusivity has left me feeling excluded and disheartened as I believe there should be a platform that represents and addresses the concerns of all students, regardless of their backgrounds.
The Scribe: What has been your favorite class at UIC so far?
Michaels: Christianity and World Culture by Professor Sigamoney Shakespeare was my favorite class. Professor Shakespeare is a passionate and knowledgeable instructor who effectively communicates the subject matter and creates an interactive learning environment that can make a significant impact. His classes incorporate interactive teaching methods, such as group discussions, hands-on activities, and case studies, and he actively encourages participation and sharing of diverse ideas. His class also has interesting and intellectually stimulating content that can capture students’ attention and curiosity, especially when it challenges their critical thinking and encourages exploration of new ideas. It is a very positive and supportive learning environment, where students feel comfortable asking questions, sharing thoughts, and engaging in open discussions. Opportunities for growth, constructive feedback, and well-structured assessments with clear grading standards with no outstanding pressure is what in general makes his class the best for me.
The Scribe: Do you have a role model? If so, who and why?Â
Michaels: Role models play a significant role in shaping our lives and guiding us towards becoming the best version of ourselves. In my journey as an international student from Ethiopia, I am fortunate to have two exceptional role models who have shaped my character, instilled values, and inspired me to reach for the stars. These role models are none other than my amazing parents. Their unwavering love, sacrifices, and remarkable qualities have made them my ultimate source of inspiration. Throughout my life, they have been there for me, offering encouragement, guidance, and a shoulder to lean on. Their love is not contingent on my achievements or successes, but rather it is unconditional and unwavering. Their belief in my abilities has given me the confidence to pursue my dreams and overcome obstacles with their support by my side. My parents have taught me the value of sacrifice and hard work through their own actions. They have made countless sacrifices to provide me with the opportunities and resources I needed to thrive. They have worked tirelessly to ensure that my needs were met and that I had access to quality education. Witnessing their dedication and work ethic has instilled in me a strong sense of perseverance and a drive to achieve my goals.Â
Life is filled with ups and downs, and my parents have taught me the importance of resilience and maintaining a positive outlook. They have faced their fair share of challenges, yet they have never allowed adversity to define them. Instead, they have taught me to view setbacks as opportunities for growth and to approach life with optimism and a determined spirit. Their ability to bounce back from difficult times has inspired me to persevere in the face of adversity and maintain a hopeful outlook on life. I am truly blessed to call my parents my role models, and I aspire to make them proud by following in their footsteps and making a positive impact on the world, just as they have done for me.
